If your cat has arthritis, then you'll want to make sure that the litter box is easily accessible so they don't have to go too far to use it. Also, if you have another pet like a dog then you'll want to place the litter box in an area where the dog can't get to it.

The first rule of thumb when placing the litter box is to place it in an area that is quiet and away from any high-traffic areas in the home. Try to keep the litter boxes away from furnaces, refrigerators, washing machines and any other appliances that make noises. Cats prefer places where they feel safe and secure.
