How To Keep Your Cat From Opening Doors

If you have a cat, you know that they can be very curious creatures. One minute they're curled up in your lap purring contentedly, and then the next thing you know they're darting off under the bed or exploring some high-up shelf. This curiosity often extends to doors, which can pose a problem if you don't want your feline child going outside or into certain rooms of your house.

The first step is to figure out why your cat is opening the door in the first place. Are they trying to get outside? Are they looking for attention? Once you know the reason, you can take steps to address the behavior.

If your cat is opening the door to get outside, the best solution is to provide them with some type of enclosed outdoor space where they can get fresh air and enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors without being able to roam free. If they're opening the door for attention, try giving them more quality time each day, including regular play sessions. You can also provide them with plenty of opportunities to scratch and climb. You can also purchase commercial sprays made specifically for deterring cats, or you can make your own using a mixture of water and lemon juice or cayenne pepper. Simply spray these around the perimeter of the door (being careful not to get any in your cat's eyes) and they'll quickly learn that this area is off-limits. Just be sure to reapply regularly as needed, as these deterrents will lose their effectiveness over time.
