Simple Steps To Keeping Your Cat's Litter Box Fresh and Clean
Cleaning a cat litter box isn't anyone's favorite task, but it's an essential part of taking care of your furry friend. Read this article to find out the right way to clean a cat litter box.
A clean litter box is important for the health and happiness of your cat. The best way to keep the litter box clean is to scoop it daily and do a complete cleaning once a week. However, by following these simple tips, you can make cleaning the litter box as quick and painless as possible.
Supplies Needed:
- Disposable gloves
- Trash bag
- Litter Scooper
- Vanishing scent dish soap
- Paper towels or old rags
- Fresh, unscented cat litter
Cleaning Procedure:
1. Put on your gloves. Scoop out all of the solid waste from the litter box into the trash bag. Be sure to get all of the waste, including any stuck on pieces. It’s important to do this daily to prevent bacteria build up.
2. Add dish soap to warm water in a bucket and mix together. Generously soak paper towels or rags in soapy water. Wipe down the entire inside of the litter box, getting rid of any stuck on waste or urine stains. Let the soapy water sit for a few minutes to dissolve any tough stains before wiping it down with a clean, damp paper towel or rag.
3. Rinse the inside of the box with warm water until all of the soap residue is gone and then dry with a clean paper towel or rag.
4. Add fresh, unscented cat litter to the litter box, filling it up to about 3 inches from the top of the box. Be sure to use unscented litters as scented litters can be irritating to your cat’s lungs and cause respiratory issues.
5. Empty out all of the used litter and dispose of it in your outside garbage bin.
Cleaning Tips:
Scoop out solids as soon as possible after your cat uses the litter box as odor control will be better and there will be less waste build up over time.
Avoid using cleaners that contain ammonia as they smell like urine to cats and can encourage them to continue urinating in that spot.
Never use bleach on anything that your cat will come into contact with as it can be toxic.
If you have multiple cats, you should have one litter box per cat plus an extra one just in case.- It’s helpful to place litter boxes in different areas around your house so your cat always has one close by.
Some cats prefer covered boxes while others like them open so try different types until you find one that your cat likes
Be patient when training your kitten because accidents can happen.
Healthy adult cats typically only need their litter boxes scooped out once per day while kittens may need it done more frequently.
