All you need is some basic sewing skills, some fabric, and a good dose of creativity. We’ll walk you through the whole process, step-by-step, so you can have your own unique and snuggly blanket in no time. Let’s get started!

Choose The Flannel That Suits You
If you're looking for a flannel to make a blanket, you have plenty of options to choose from! There are floral, animal print, and striped designs, as well as solid colors like dark green and hot pink. Consider the surroundings where you plan to use your blanket and pick a color that will fit in nicely. With so many possibilities, you're sure to find the perfect flannel for your project.

Select Your Quilt Filling (Batting)

When choosing batting for your blanket, you can buy prepackaged batting in Twin, Queen, and King sizes at your local fabric or craft store. Alternatively, you can purchase a custom size directly off of the bolt in store. If you go the custom route, it is important to make sure that the batting is rectangularly shaped.

Buy Some Soft And Comfy Fabric

Head to your nearby arts and crafts store to purchase plush fabric. See if you can find a section with "Soft and Comfy" fabrics that are 100% polyester. You can select from a range of designs, including shaggy, stripes, dots, and fluffy. When picking a plush fabric that compliments your flannel style and color, white is a safe choice, but you can choose whichever color or design you prefer.

Purchase A Standard Single Strand Sewing Thread

For a successful sewing project, it is important to buy the right thread. If you will be using a sewing machine, you should purchase a standard single strand sewing thread. On the other hand, if you are going to hand-sew the blanket, you will need a six-count embroidery floss. Regardless of your chosen sewing method, it is essential to get a six-count embroidery floss to complete the edges of the blanket.

Pre-wash Your Fabric To Keep From Shrinking

To ensure that your blanket doesn't shrink into a strange, uneven shape when washed, it is important to pre-wash both the flannel and plush fabric before you begin to sew. If the fabric is pre-packaged, you can wash it with cool water and a safe fabric detergent.

Ensure Pieces Are The Same Size

Place all three fabrics (flannel, batting, and plush fabric) on top of one another, matching up one corner so that the sides coming off that corner are flush. Cut off any excess edges, ensuring that all three pieces are the same size. This step is only necessary if the fabrics are not already the same size.

Put Fabric In Order
Lay down your batting on a smooth tabletop, and then line up your fabric pieces in the correct order. You should have the the plush fabric right side down first, then have the flannel right side up. All of the pieces should be equal in size. Both the flannel and plush fabric should have their right sides facing one another.

Place The Masking Tape Around The Back Side

To get a one half inch inseam, place the masking tape around the backside of your plush fabric, leaving the edge of the tape one half inch away from the edge of the fabric. This will ensure that your fabric has a secure one half inch inseam.

Sew Slowly Using Your Sewing Machine
To get the perfect seam, place the fabric underneath the needle of your sewing machine and sew slowly, pulling it down consistently. Ensure the thread is sewn one half inch away from the edge of the fabric for a one half inch inseam. Make sure that the seam of the thread is on the outside edge of the masking tape. Use your sewing machine to achieve the best results.

Sew By Hand If You Do Not Have A Sewing Machine

If you don't have a sewing machine and would like a more handcrafted look, you can sew your blanket by hand. Begin by threading your needle with a six-count embroidery floss, and tie a knot at the end of the long, hanging end of the thread. Starting at the corner of your blanket, insert the needle into the underside of the plush fabric and pull it through until the knot catches. Then, pull the needle around the edges of all three fabrics.

Trim The Edges

Use a pair of scissors or a rotary blade to trim the edge of your blanket, about one quarter inch away from the inseam. If you are using a rotary blade, make sure you are cutting on a safe surface.

Iron Down The Edges

Iron down the remaining edges of the top layer of plush fabric. Set the iron to the lowest setting and press firmly along the edge of the blanket. Lift the iron up carefully to ensure that the fabric stays flat. Repeat the process around the entire edge.

Turn Your Blanket Inside Out

Flip your blanket inside-out. Stick your hand in the hole between the flannel and plush fabric, pushing in until you can feel the seam on the other side and pull gently. Up until now, the plush fabric has been right side in, with the batting on the outside.

Close The Hole

To begin, thread a six-count embroidery floss through the eye of your needle and tie a knot at the long, loose end. Turn your blanket over so that the plush fabric is facing up. Starting from the underside of the blanket, insert the needle and thread through the plush fabric, and pull the knot to the top of the blanket. Then, sew a blanket stitch, making sure to only insert the needle and thread through the plush fabric, not the flannel or batting. Once the hole is securely sewn up, your blanket is ready to be used.
