The Ultimate Guide to Keeping Your Cat Safe this Holiday Season: Are Poinsettias Poisonous to Cats?
Plants That Are Poisonous To Your Pet

During the holiday season many people who are cat lovers will bring poinsettias into their home to help decorate it. Poinsettias are often associated with Christmas; but these plants can live many months longer after the holiday season has ended. Poinsettias contain a latex sap, which is a soapy substance that can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats. The poinsettia is only mildly toxic to cats. However, if your cat just happens to ingest this plant they will probably have mild signs such as drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, skin irritation, eye irritation or difficulty in swallowing.

Are Succulents Poisonous To Cats?

Jade Succulent

There are several varieties of the jade succulent. These plants have oval leaves and have a tree-like appearance. You should keep all types of the Jade Succulent away from your pet.

Aloe Vera

The Aloe Vera plant has these long, spiked tendrils; or they might have white spotted foliage. In any case, these succulents can cause your pet to vomit; become lethargic, and have diarrhea.

Euphorbia Succulents

These succulents may be known as the pencil cactus and/or crown of thorns. If your cat ingests this succulent they may have skin and eye irritation as well as gastrointestinal problems.

Kalanchoe Succulents

These plants may be known as the mother-in-law plant; devil’s backbone; or mother of millions.  These plants have many plentiful blossoms; and your pet should stay away from them.

Are Daisies Poisonous To Cats?

Daisies can often be found in flower shops; or they may be grown in gardens during the springtime months in many areas. While daisies may look inviting to cats due to their bright colors and sweet scent, they should be kept away from cats as ingestion of daisies may lead to gastric upset such as vomiting, diarrhea, and hypersalivation. It is best to keep an eye on your feline friends when daisies are present in your home or garden just to be safe!

Are Lilies Poisonous To Cats?

Lilies are another type of flower that are popular among pet owners due to their beauty and vibrant colors. Every part of the lily plant is poisonous to your cat to include the water that you may have in a vase! If your cat just eats a small amount of this plant whether it is a leaf or flower petal your cat can be in very serious danger because even small amounts ingested can lead to kidney failure in felines! If you suspect that your cat has eaten any part of a lily plant (including bulbs), seek veterinary care immediately!

It is important for all pet owners—especially cat owners—to familiarize themselves with plants that may pose a hazard if ingested by their pets. Four popular houseplants—poinsettias, succulents, daisies, and lilies—all have different levels of toxicity for cats if ingested so it is important that pet owners understand the risks associated with each of these plants before bringing them into their homes. If your pet starts to have certain symptoms as mentioned previously- vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation,  you may need to contact your vet immediately.

However, if your pet has not come in contact with a poisonous plant and is having  regular digestive problems you may want to consider helping your cat to get back “gut healthy” again. We have reviewed several probiotics to help your cat to accomplish this.
