This Purrfectly Controversial Debate: Are Cat Backpacks Actually Cruel (or Even Safe) For Your Feline Friend?
Are Cat Backpacks Cruel?

For many pet owners, their cats are an integral part of their family. So it’s no wonder that cat owners want to take their furry friends with them everywhere they go— and the newest way to do just that is with a cat backpack. But are cat backpacks actually safe for cats? Let’s take a closer look at this new trend and find out if it’s something you should be investing in.

Are Cat Backpacks Cruel?

The answer is not necessarily. Cats are not domesticated animals; they are wild predators at heart. Being kept in captivity can be stressful for them and may lead to behavioral issues such as aggression or scratching.  Cat backpacks may not work for every cat. Your cat could become over-excited while in the backpack and might try to escape—which could result in injury or worse!  Some felines do not like carriers of any kind because they may feel uncomfortable in these backpacks due to the confined space. If you have a cat that absolutely does not like the backpack then you may have a hard time getting them into it..

Some Cats Really Favor The Backpack

While some cats may feel uncomfortable in these backpacks, there are plenty of cats who enjoy the experience of being able to explore the world from a higher vantage point.  A backpack also provides a safe, warm and a calming space for your cat to ride without feeling overwhelmed by their surroundings. Additionally, since cats are naturally curious creatures, having them close by allows you to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't wander off too far! In fact, many cats have been known to become quite attached to their backpacks.

Are Cat Backpacks Safe?

The answer is yes if you use the backpack correctly; and use it for short trips. Make the backpack comfortable for your kitty by putting in your cat’s favorite treats and/or blanket. The backpack should also be big enough, and not fully transparent so your kitty will be able to hide. Provide  your cat with enough ventilation so they don't overheat. Additionally, it’s important to watch your cat closely when wearing the backpack – if you notice any signs of distress or discomfort, remove them from the backpack immediately; and never force your cat into a backpack!

Things to Consider Before Buying a Cat Backpack

Before purchasing or using a cat backpack, make sure it is designed specifically for felines—not just any pet carrier will do! Look for adjustable straps with padding so that you don't strain your shoulders when carrying your pet around town. Also look for breathable materials like mesh so that air can flow freely through the pack and keep your cat comfortable during hot days outdoors.
